Steve ‘Blocker’ Roach is, without doubt, one of the most respected and talented rugby league players of the modern era.
During his prime, Steve Roach was one of the toughest and most damaging props forwards in the game. Signed by the Tigers in 1982, he remained with the club for 185 top-grade games appearing in two Grand Finals and watching one from the sidelines through suspension. He made thirty-nine representative appearances for the Australian national team in Tests, WorldCup and New South Wales State of Origin matches becoming the 562ndplayer to represent Australia when he made his national representative debut in the first Test in Brisbane against New Zealand in 1985. He hit the pitch for NSW 17 times.
In 2000, he was awarded the Australian Sports Medal for his contribution to Australia's international standing in rugby league and in 2008 was named by the NRL and ARL as one of Australia's 100 Greatest Players (1908-2007).
